Open Treatment of Ankle Fracture/Dislocation

Open Treatment of Ankle Fracture/Dislocation is a surgical procedure used to repair and stabilize broken bones and dislocated joints in the ankle when closed methods are insufficient or the injury is complex. During the surgery, an incision is made to directly access the fractured bones and dislocated joint. The bones are realigned (reduced) and fixed in place using plates, screws, or pins to restore proper anatomy and joint stability. This procedure aims to relieve pain, restore function, and prevent long-term complications such as arthritis or chronic instability.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general or spinal anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the ankle to access the fracture. Bone fragments are repositioned into proper alignment, and any dislocation is corrected. Metal plates, screws, or pins are then used to stabilize the bones. The incision is closed, and the ankle is wrapped in a sterile dressing. A cast or boot is applied to protect the repair.
Following surgery, weight-bearing on the affected leg is typically restricted for several weeks. Swelling and stiffness are common early in recovery. Physical therapy is often necessary to restore strength, flexibility, and balance.
