Open Treatment of Clavicle Fracture
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the collarbone to directly access the fracture site. Broken bone fragments are carefully realigned into their normal position. A metal plate and screws are placed along the bone to hold the pieces securely while they heal. Once fixation is complete, the incision is closed with sutures or staples and covered with a sterile dressing.
After surgery, the arm is typically placed in a sling to limit shoulder movement. Patients can expect swelling, soreness, and stiffness in the shoulder area for several weeks. Light activities are resumed gradually, with physical therapy recommended to restore range of motion and strength.
