Shoulder Arthroscopy with SLAP Lesion Repair
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
 - The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
 - The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions around the shoulder to insert an arthroscope and specialized instruments. A SLAP lesion, which is a tear of the labrum (cartilage rim of the shoulder socket), is located and repaired. The surgeon uses sutures or anchors to reattach the torn labrum to the bone, restoring stability to the shoulder joint. Once repairs are complete, the incisions are closed and dressed. After surgery, the shoulder is immobilized in a sling for several weeks to protect the repair. Patients can expect some swelling, stiffness, and discomfort. Physical therapy begins gradually, focusing first on range of motion and later on strengthening.
